The Story Behind Bessie’s Picks: A Mother’s Day Collection Inspired by My Nan

Some of my favourite memories of my nan, Bessie, are surprisingly simple.

Nothing grand or extravagant, just small, ordinary moments that somehow felt special. Her never-ending cups of tea, her love for sweet treats and always referring to herself as ‘Trendy Nanny’, loving vibrant patterns, having her hair done and her all-important ‘smellies’. She was always ready with a warm smile and more than a story or two to tell!

If you asked her what she wanted for a birthday or Christmas, she’d wave the idea away almost immediately.

“Oh don’t fuss,” she’d say. “I don’t need anything.”

But like many grandparents, the smallest thoughtful gestures meant the most to her.

A favourite chocolate.
A surprise visit.
Something cosy to enjoy with a cup of tea.

Those were the things that made her smile.

And it’s exactly those little moments that inspired this year’s Mother’s Day hamper collection at Hampartistry, Bessie’s Picks.

Bessie had a wonderful way of finding joy in simple things. She didn’t need big celebrations or extravagant gifts. What mattered most to her was the thought behind them and the family surrounding her.

Looking back now, the small moments were never really about the gift itself. They were about the feeling behind it, the quiet reminder that someone cared.

When creating this Mother’s Day collection, we thought about all the little things that used to make Bessie happy.

The cosy socks, sweet treats, ‘posh smellies’ and not forgetting the all-important cup of tea!

All of which she enjoyed and often insisted on sharing around with family…sweet treats that is, not the cosy socks! Creating a shared memory, moments of which I now treasure. Generous is an understatement when describing Bessie…even when it came to her own gifts!
