Christmas Eve Gifting - Where it came from...why...and how?

As the big day is fast-approaching, our second blog, of course, had to be a whole lot of Christmas! And what better topic to focus on than one of THE most hyped Christmas crazes of them all...Christmas Eve Gifting!

Despite its increased popularity in recent years, Christmas Gifting is actually thought to originate from historical traditions, across several European countries...sooo, here's your reason to open that present, that you just couldn't resist, a day early AND order your Children's Christmas Eve Magic Hamper, before it is too late! (Yes, a very unsubtle, unapologetic Hampartistry plug...rude not to, right?)

The tradition of early gift-giving originates from the historical focus on the importance of family, festivity and the anticipation of the BIG day (Christmas Day to be precise). To some, Christmas Eve is that very last day to catch up on last minute gift-wrapping, gift-buying and other important aspects of preparation for the 25th December! However, for many, this day symbolises the commencement of the Christmas celebrations, gathering with family and friends to withhold family traditions and have some festive fun! Christmas Eve gift-giving holds great importance, along with other festive traditions including wearing Christmas pyjamas, watching Christmas movie classics and tracking Santa's journey.

Anyway...a little bit about where Christmas Eve gifting evolves from!

So...

Many European countries take part in the early Christmas Eve gifting, including Germany, Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Czech Republic, Croatia and more. Its tradition to exchange Christmas gifts on the evening of Christmas Eve, commencing the main festive celebration. Further to this, EVEN the British Royal Family take part in the long-standing tradition, opening gifts on afternoon or evening of the 24th December - this tradition originated from their German heritage which dates back to when German customs were introduced into the Royal household.

If it is good enough for King Charles, it gets a yes from me!

Anyway, the Christmas Eve Box, in particular, gained huge popularity in prior years...it really was a hit during Christmas of 2013...can you believe that?! Since then, many families have adopted the tradition and children are presented with an exciting bundle of treats and festive activities to kick of the festive fun (or festive madness...whatever fits the bill). This early gift not only elevates the excitement that Christmas creates but also is a VERY successful way of keeping children entertained whilst the last few gifts are purchased, wrapped and ever so subtly slipped under the tree or that top secret hiding spot, while the children aren't looking!

Some items found in a Christmas Eve Box may include the below –

·       A Christmas Activity Book and festive games or crafts to provide Christmassy entertainment for children and spark their excitement for the most magical day of the year.

·       Festive, sweet treats to enjoy whilst the grown ups are busy finishing off the wrapping

·       Hot Chocolate making kit and/or a Christmas cup to enjoy during a classic Christmas film.

·       Festive soft toys to keep them company in final hours before Santa makes his appearance.

·       Festive smellies…as a subtle source of persuasion to get them in the bath and in bed before Santa arrives!

The unveiling of the Christmas Eve Box is now just as much a tradition as leaving a mince pie out for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph. I really believe that this addition enhances the magic of Christmas and therefore felt that it was essential to incorporate our 'Children's Christmas Eve Magic Hamper' into our initial offering at Hampartistry. This is a very special hamper of which incorporates a selection of hand-picked goodies...all bound to bring smiles and laughter to your little ones.

Despite our excitement for the, now, very popular Christmas Eve Box, we do believe this is in no way essential to make Christmas a magical time for children. It is the love, togetherness and sense of family that truly matters. With this in mind, we have incorporated an alternative option that hosts a similar selection of festive treats into our ‘Children’s Festive Fun Hamper’. This allows families to continue the tradition of exchanging Christmas gifts on Christmas Day, while still enjoying the excitement and joy of a thoughtfully curated festive surprise.

Lots of Love,

Emily – Founder @ Hampartistry
